Dude… They Are Dredging the Boat Ramp in Pohoiki

In June, people showed up for a celebratory blessing upon the Pohoiki boat ramp in preparation for the dredging that ensued. They are expected to clear an estimated 42k cubic yards of lava rocks and boulders. The Pohoiki boat ramp is a focal point for the community and people are very pleased with this project being underway. Fishing is an important part of the Puna community, and local fishermen have been waiting patiently for the project to start. The state had hoped for more federal support in funding the removal of all the volcanic rock that is blocking the boat ramp, but FEMA only approved the rebuilding of the entrance channel. It took the efforts of state lawmakers to convince the legislature that this was a top priority for their people. The cost of the total project is approximately $9 million, which is less than the total amount that was needed and the extra cost is being covered by the Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation’s Boating Special Fund, which gets its revenue from boating fees. Everyone, including the companies hired to do the work, gave props to the community for demanding to have Pohoiki restored. The crew has nine months to complete the work, but the expectation is that they’ll be finished by November.

Hawaii doesn’t follow Daylight Saving Time (DST), unlike most states in the U.S. Its unique position near the equator keeps sunrise and sunset times fairly consistent year-round. This means Hawaii stays on Hawaiian Standard Time all year, which can surprise visitors. During DST, the time difference becomes more pronounced, as Hawaii is three hours behind California and six hours behind New York.

Real Estate Tip of the Month:

Don’t skip hiring an agent! An agent’s job is to advocate for you and save you money during the complicated process of buying a home. They help you find the right home that fits your needs, referring you to off-market properties or hidden gems in a sought-after neighborhood you might have missed. One of the biggest perks? Negotiation. They can handle tough discussions with sellers and can often help you get a better price than you might on your own.

Business Feature:   The Kitchen Witch:
This newly opened business features an array of different things. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, it is a new atmosphere that everyone in town is dying to try. Well, we tried it and it was a very pleasant experience. The place was clean and nicely decorated. The food was very good and the staff was very nice to us. I enjoyed the buttermilk pancakes and they were unique, but good. I would go back and try something from their dinner menu.Their bakery section also looked very appealing! Overall, I would definitely recommend The Kitchen Witch to all the foodies in our little Pahoa neighborhood. https://maps.app.goo.gl/GLzWS3cmFnUu6aoP9
